In Yellowstone Park

Night Sky Observing: Fri. & Sat. July 4-5. 10:30 pm

Between the Madison Campground and Amphitheater. Find Jupiter, craters on the moon & star clusters. Telescopes available. Dress warmly; bring a flashlight.

Safe Solar Observing: Saturday, July 5, 2-5 pm

Safely view the sun through telescopes at Old Faithful Visitor Center area

'Lord of the Strings,' Arvel Bird, the 2007 Native American Music Awards' Artist of the Year, will swoop into Yellowstone July 8 -14 to play the fiddle, guitar, mandolin and Native flute, at Old Faithful's Upper General Store near the famous geyser, to coincide with each timely eruption.

Junior Ranger Program

Children between the ages of 5 and 12 are invited to become Junior Rangers. Any park visitor center or the Junior Ranger Station at Madison Junction can provide details on how kids can learn more about Yellowstone and earn Junior Ranger patches.

Young Scientist Program

At Old Faithful and Canyon, students ages 5 and up can become Young Scientists by investigating the mysteries of Yellowstone and completing the activities in the visitor center and the field.

Ranger Adventure Hikes

Explore Yellowstone on a guided half-day hike with a park ranger. The hikes are offered all summer long. Tickets are available at Albright (Mammoth Hot Springs), Old Faithful, Grant, Fishing Bridge and Canyon Visitor Centers. Below are some of the hikes offered:

Mudpot Special - 8 am, Tues. & Fri.

See a close-up view of colorful hot springs and bubbling mudpots at Pocket Basin, a backcountry thermal area along the famous Firehold River. This is a moderate 4 to 4.5 hour hike of a 3 mile loop.

Lone Star Stroll - 7:30 am, Thurs.

Take an easy walk through lush forests along the scenic Firehold River

and visit Lone Star Geyser, one of Yellowstone's hidden treasures, on this 4.5 to 5 hour family adventure.

Gem of the Rockies - 8 am, Sun.

Hike through Pleasant Valley into the forest of Elk Creek and along the roaring Yellowstone River to Garnet Hill on this "gem" of a trail. It's a 6 hour long 7.5 mile moderate hike in the Tower/Roosevelt area.

Yellowstone Institute

The non-profit Yellowstone Association Institute offers daily guided tours for private groups, field seminars taught by college professors, research scientists and park staff, and backpacking courses into the park's lightly traveled interior. Call 307-344-2294 to receive a catalog, for more information or to make a reservation.
